Working with pastels is new to me, and it was a really different experience. I found similarities with pastels and other mediums. I loved trying out pastels in Mr. Velasquez class. Not only that, but I will absolutely make more pieces and play with the lighting to make more work people can enjoy. This piece is about freedom. In addition to the painting, I created a poem for some context.

Drowning is one of my biggest fears, but I find peace in swimming

Freedom

Yet I lay there being constricted by everyone's words

Freedom

I am still trapped underwater, bounded by chains made of water the stain of a deep lapis

Freedom

Freedom, but I'm trapped in the boundaries of the rules and expectations that were set before me

Always being watched over me, never having space to think for myself

Freedom, but I don't feel free
