Kaileen Manglona, Gift Giving, colored pencil, $120

Kaileen Manglona

Marina High School

Senior

My name is Kaileen Manglona, I am a senior at Marina High and have been interested in art for years. Most of the time, the art pieces I make have no meaning or story behind them, I struggle to have motivation and inspiration to do so and end up doing something random with nothing behind it. Recently, I challenged myself to make an art piece that I am able to explain why I did it and the story it narrates.

In this piece, I've decided to use a different medium than I usually do. Over the years, I have used acrylic paint and pens, but I chose colored pencil because it seems like a good combination between what I usually use. For the boy and flowers, I used colored pencil, but for the background, I used book pages and ripped them to different sizes.

For this piece, I wanted to show the different love languages that are given towards someone you love. The options I had were acts of service, physical touch, gift giving, words of affirmation, and quality time. I chose gift giving. This piece shows a boy moments before he gave a bouquet of flowers to his love interest, it symbolizes love and how much someone appreciates your existence.
