Art is its own language, in the sense that it can speak depending on the depictions of the mind. I like to think that I have grasped the basics of the language and that I am still developing my abilities. My artistic abilities have become like a second language to me.  A spark has grown with me throughout my phases of adolescence to this time. I use the outlet of art for translating ideas onto paper for both entertainment and emotional connection.

Through mediums such as watercolor, colored pencil, pastel, gauche, and acrylic, I let ideas flow freely from mind to hand to paper. However, I find that my favorite medium traces itself to my roots of pencil and paper. The malleability of the graphite on the paper gives a sense of nostalgia, as my younger self used the exact same medium. I  have tried to explore the creation of scenery with the mediums previously discussed, but find that I am partial to drawing people and figures.

The piece I have drawn is my own depiction of the famous Mexican lottery game “Lotteria”, of the card El Catrin. I chose to make him look into the distance to give him a regal and self-assured feeling. What I pictured while drawing him was a confident man from sometime in the 1800s. With the use of posture and facial expression I feel that I captured his air of confidence. The graphite in contrast with the colored pencil background works together to create a more vintage feel to the work.
