Kaitlyn Santana, Fear of Who I Am Becoming, oil pastels, $50

My work is based on exploring fears and phobias, especially those that are psychological rather than physical. I am interested in how fear shapes identity and influences the way people see themselves. As an artist, I use my work to confront emotions such as anxiety, self-doubt, and the fear of change. Creating art allows me to express internal struggles that are often hidden and difficult to communicate, while also helping me understand my own fears more deeply.

I primarily work with oil pastels because their soft texture and blendability allow me to create smooth transitions and distorted forms. I often use muted colors, blurred edges, and symbolic imagery such as mirrors and isolated figures to represent phobias connected to self-reflection and identity. My artwork focuses on themes like eisoptrophobia (fear of mirrors), fear of becoming someone unfamiliar, and the anxiety of being confronted with multiple versions of oneself.

The piece I am submitting for this show, Fear of Who I Am Becoming, reflects these ideas by depicting a solitary figure surrounded by mirrors. This work grew from sketchbook studies and personal experiences with anxiety and self-reflection. One of the main challenges in creating this piece was translating an internal fear into a visual form without being literal. Through this artwork, I hope viewers feel a sense of quiet unease and recognize their own fears within the space of reflection.
