My artwork is heavily influenced by my love for the horror genre. For the past seven years, I have been certain that this passion will drive my career toward character and set design, as well as special effects makeup artistry. I have always had an immense fascination with exploring darker themes, such as facial trauma, the aftermath of violence, and the emotions involved in recovery. Overall, my work focuses on expressing deep emotion and harsh imagery through semi-realistic portraits and scenes. I believe it is important to acknowledge and create art that embraces the parts of life that are often shunned. I strive for my artwork to be thought-provoking, and perhaps even difficult to look at.
This piece is painted in acrylic and portrays British actress Mia Goth in the A24 thriller/drama film Maxxxine, the final installment of the X trilogy. I chose to paint a frame from this movie because of its intense themes surrounding the protagonist’s relentless pursuit of fame. I wanted to capture the raw emotion and aggression present in the scene. I was fascinated by the line delivery and the rage that radiated through the screen, and I knew I wanted to find a way to honor and appreciate it - especially considering that each film in the trilogy has tremendously inspired me to branch out and harness more emotion and expressive facial features in my work. This piece was a challenging and messy process, but I thoroughly enjoyed working through it and ultimately arrived at a result I am very proud of.
