Lauren Taylor, Head in the Clouds, acrylic, $750

With this piece, I hoped to convey the feeling of tranquility that comes with looking into the sky, highlighting the beauty of human connection to nature. To achieve this, I utilized a color palette of bright colors for the clouds that was inspired by the spectacular sunsets here on the Monterey Peninsula. I placed the sun at the focal point of the piece, creating an overlap between it and the subject, in order to emphasize the connection between the sun and the figure.
The subject’s closed eyes and relaxed posture suggest a moment of peaceful reflection, inviting the viewer to share in this quiet sense of escape. I incorporated small star shapes within the figure’s hair to symbolize imagination and inner wonder, reinforcing the idea that nature can serve as a space for both emotional and mental rest. The loose brushstrokes in the clouds help create a dreamlike atmosphere, further enhancing the sense of calm. Overall, this piece represents how moments spent immersed in nature can feel both restorative and deeply personal.
