Alexandra Tinoco, Where I Belong, acrylic, $70

Alexandra Tinoco

Alisal High School, Junior

Since I was very young, there was something about art and anything colorful that caught my attention. I've always loved art and every form of expression because, for me, art is like seeing the soul of the creator. Even though I've been drawing since I was little, I never took classes until this year; I'm currently taking my first regular art class.

I really enjoy drawing with just a pencil, painting with watercolors, or using acrylic paints. With pencils and watercolors, I usually focus on realism, but I haven't quite managed to do that with acrylics yet, though I feel that with practice I'll get there. In my drawings and sketches, I usually only paint people, especially singers I like or family members. I would like to find something that I'm truly passionate about creating, or find a subject where I can feel completely myself.

I was thinking a lot about what to do since I'm not very creative, but then the idea of what it means to be a migrant came to me. In this piece of art, I want to reflect the feeling of having to leave your country, the feeling of leaving your home, and the feeling of leaving your family. I moved to the United States from Mexico when I was 13 years old, and even now that I'm almost 17, I can say that the nostalgia of leaving the country where you grew up is very strong. To this day, I haven't fully adjusted, and I miss my family a lot. Although the reasons why I moved weren't out of necessity, there are many stories out there of people who were or are forced to leave their homes.
