Ariana Hernandez

Everett Alvarez High School, Senior

My art journey started in my childhood is one of self-discovery and allowing the pencil to take me where it wants to go. I draw and paint from a place of vulnerability, and I can express myself like no other on a blank slate. Unlike life, you start off with a fresh canvas, and the possibilities are endless. Truth be told, I never saw a future for myself and thought I would get caught up in the current and stay there. My feelings and constant changes and shifts mold my art into what it is. I see so many people my age struggling with addiction and a constant need for peer validation, and I hear you. I have a beautiful and full life with beautiful people, so why am I not beautiful and full of spirit?

My favorite mediums to work with are watercolor and colored pencils. I love how you can choose what your destiny is with watercolor and show how deep and different certain textures can be. I recently started to use more colored pencils, and I focus on the saturation of the colors.

My current work is just focused more on experimenting. My art before was very cartoonish, and now I let my mind wander and create fun works off. I want my art to punch you in the face with color. I base my work more off my childhood experience and that feeling of teenage angst. I hope that anybody who sees my art sees the feelings of an angry teenage girl. All of these wonderful and dreaded feelings that bubble up into what my art is. My art is me, and I am glad to share a bit of me with you.
