Ella Reilly, Blossoms in Korea, fineliner pen, acrylic paint, $325

Ella Reilly

Marina High School, Junior

This piece explores the development of South Korea and how it is constantly evolving. By studying the new, clean architecture in the background and how it contrasts with the traditional, rustic buildings in the front, we can see how Korea has maintained its charm throughout the years. As someone who is South Korean, living here in California, one of my biggest fears is falling out of touch with my culture.

For years, I have always used art as an escape from reality, and it has become a big part of my life. I’ve always spent hours creating, on a piece of paper, anything that came to mind. I love to use a variety of mediums, but for this drawing in particular, my main medium is pen. I have never been too fond of creating abstract art, instead, I like to be in control of the shapes I draw, the lines I create, and the little specific details.

The main medium I have always used is colored pencils, but once I realized how much I love working with a pen I wanted to challenge myself to create something different from my past projects. When working with a pen I like to draw buildings with their own unique qualities. This piece allowed me to notice the aspects of Korean architecture and how its culture is still alive. I also love cherry blossoms and admire the beauty of that particular flower. They’re vibrant, yet delicate, and special to Korea.
