Alice Bucher, Helmet Jellyfish SP, acrylic, $200

I have always had a passion for marine life and the ecosystems that support them.

My fully acrylic-based piece depicts a deep-sea jellyfish called a Helmet Jellyfish. These jellies are incredible and can produce their own light within their delicate bodies to ward off predators. I find them to be very intriguing.

Despite our close proximity to the ocean and the amazing research on the deep ocean done in our area, I find that many overlook the organisms that live in these usually unreachable depths. In a world threatened by a changing climate, I think it is very important to shed light on the animals left in the dark; these animals matter too, and are as important as they are fascinating.
